The Great Upset started as a lot of bands do... making quite different music as a different band under a different name.... ODYC. Well what happened to that band? We're still making great music under that name but our first record (Black Sun Rising) made a few things very clear: We had distinct alt-folk-rock influences where a full band sometimes sounded best, and other classic folk stylings where a more stripped-down acoustic sound brought the best out of the music.
So when recording the follow-up effort (Coldest Kiss), a more energetic, focused sound began to emerge, we looked at a different way of doing things. With more full-band involvement in songwriting, the addition of electric guitar and deft production provided by Steele Croswhite (co-producer) & Darren Jackson of Kid Dakota/The Hopefuls (co-producer and engineer), the decision was made to separate into two different bands. With so many acoustic songs being written by Bart and Jeromy, and even more being developed as a collective band, the way to keep the songs true to their original visions was to have ODYC revert back to a threesome (Bart, Luke and Jeromy) and continue to release acoustic music under that name. The Great Upset however, with Matt and Jason, is moving the band forward into a new, more powerful direction, taking the majority of our energy and time creating Alternative Western Folk Rock.
